1st Ever Andover Scramble Andover Trails & Shawsheen Greenway |
September 30, 2018 was a picture perfect day for the first-ever Andover Scramble. Twenty-four participants in both relay teams and as individuals hiked 3 miles, then paddle 2 miles, then bike 15 miles all in Andover.
Starting with a hike on the Bay Circuit on Indian Ridge the participants looped back to returned to the Abbott Bridge canoe launch on the Shawsheen River. From there they paddled canoes and kayaks upstream and around a small island near Fosters Island and returned to the launch. Leaving the River, they jumped on their bikes and peddled on the marked on the Andover Bike loop completing the ride at Oak and Iron Brewery. “The event went very smoothly for our pilot year” commented organizer Harry Voorhees. “We hope to repeat it again next year”. We would be remiss if we didn’t report that the Andover Conservation and Planning professional staff set a new world record coming in first and killing the field. Congratulations to Bob Douglas, Paul Materazzo, and Lynn Viselli. Also of note is “high water mark” set by Chris and Christy Bensley as the first (and only) couple to complete all three legs! |
Free CANOE/KAYAK DayAugust 2018 - Come to Shawsheen Pines for last chance for free rentals this year: August 24. Due to the success of our free canoe/kayak rental days in July, an additional day is being offered on August 24. In addition to the fleet of family friendly canoes and kayaks, we also will have 3 stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) for use. All you need to participate is a good altitude and we will provide paddles, life preservers, and just enough instruction to get you started. Shawsheen Pines is located on Lowell Junction Road across from Pfizer. Come between 12:30 and 3:30 and we will get you on the water on a first come first serve basis.

2019 Herring CountRiver herring are coming back to the Shawsheen River from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn again now that two dams blocking them from their historical home have been removed. We plan to document their return by counting them.
We are seeking volunteers to sign up to watch the the river for just 10 minutes and record the number of herring that you see. Choose a time slot and come any time during that period to count fish! |
