Fishing & Hunting
Fishing - Spring ushers in the beginning of the trout fishing season on the Shawsheen River. The fish bring crowds of anglers to traditional hotspots such as the "horn bridge" on Central Street and the Ballardvale Millpond.
Once in April and another time in May, MassWildlife stocks trout that were raised in the state hatcheries. The fisheries technicians net the fish and release them off each of the bridges that span the river. The Massachusetts hatchery system is the finest in New England and the quality of the Brook, Brown, and Rainbow trout that they raise is top notch. The fish, which can be quite large, are delicious and put up a great fight when hooked. To find out when and if any trout have been stocked, check out the trout stocking schedule on the MassWildlife website.
